Climate
of Guyana
Guyana
is located close to the equator where the temperature is high throughout
the year. In Guyana the daily temperatures and the wind blowing off the
Atlantic Ocean makes it even colder.
There
are four seasons in Guyana and in mid-April to mid August there is heavy
rainfall. Sometimes when heavy rain falls in Guyana, it floods and people
who have small and flat houses can’t stay in them until the rainfall stops.
Then the dry season begins in mid- November followed by the third season
of rainfall, which lasts until mid- February when there is another dry
season. In Guyana there is only rainfall and dry season weather. It’s not
like the United States, which has winter and autumn. The people like the
seasons there. The average amount of rainfall each year in Guyana is 90
inches. Sometimes there is a low of 60 inches and high 120 inches depending
on the area and the year. During the dry season the humidity in the air
is very high averaging about 80%. The watery climate affects many lives
in Guyana because people don’t have a place to live when the rain falls.
Guyana is a very nice country, the “Land of many waters.”
Holi Phagwha is the celebration of the New Year and
beginning of spring in India. It is similar in some ways to April Fool’s
day because the festivities include trying to make people feel foolish
by covering them with red and yellow colored powder and spraying them with
colored or plain water. Holi Phagwha is a very special holiday in Guyana
and India. People play Holi with everyone because it is time for joy. If
someone is dead in your family you can’t play Holi or light Divali because
they are in tute. Holi is fun for everyone, especially for children
because on Holi Day everyone goes to church and play with water. In the
afternoon they play with colored water. I like Holi Phagwha. It is
fun.
Divali, the festival of light, is celebrated by all Hindu around the world. It is a celebration in honor of Lakshmi the goddess of wealth and prosperity. Lakshmi returned home and she couldn’t find her way because it was the darkest night of the year. So people every where think that if they light the night up she could return from her summer residence. Another reason for light is the story of an Indian King, Lord Rammer. He was banished from his kingdom for fourteen years, and it was his return from the banishment, It was the darkness night of the year, so the people lit up the night. Divali celebrated his return. He was a great Lord. He rules the whole Kingdom. Divali is a very special day for all Hindus, they light up the night and then go to church.
